How To Help A Dog With Arthritis with Natural Remedies

Updated: Mar 2

arthritis in dogs

In order to help your dog with arthritis, you should make sure that they get the exercise that they need. This can be done by playing fetch with them, taking them on walks, or even just having them chase a laser pointer around. You can also try to make sure that your dog is getting enough exercise by taking them on long walks.

Arthritis and osteoarthritis is a common condition in dogs, affecting many breeds and all ages.

Knowing how to help your arthritic dog get around is important because it will make life easier for your dog and more enjoyable for you.

There are a variety of helpful aids that you can use to help your dog get around in their day-to-day life, including ramps and dog wheelchairs.

1.) Get them an orthopedic or cooling gel memory foam bed to keep them comfortable. Just make sure the bed is low to the ground so it reduces the effort to climb in and get the needed rest. Keep it away from damp drafts and cold air.

Ratings: 4.5 out of 5. 91,940 Ratings. A top selling orthopedic dog bed! Review: I meant to order the memory foam option but hit orthopedic by mistake. I’m ok with that because it’s super comfy. If I had an older dog instead of a pup i would have returned it for the memory foam, but not necessary. I think this bed will last a very long time. I supervise her and always distract her with a chew toy if she starts to bite at it. I highly recommend this bed. One of my better purchases.

2.) If your dog likes to join you on the couch then purchasing a dog ramp is extremely helpful. It will also come in handy to help your dog get into the car. Less lifting for you.

Ratings: 4.1 out of 5. 549 ratings. Review: The sturdiness of this ramp is perfect. I would definitely purchase again. The only concern is the carpet on the ramp is very slick and my dog has a hard time getting her grip to go up.

3.) Red light, hand held

light therapeutic laser which stimulates blood flow to your dog's tissue. This in turn decreases inflammation and generally increases muscle relaxation. This helps to reduce pain and encourages faster healing.

Ratings 4.2 out of 5. Review: It feels like the laser targets to inflammation, I can feel it lightly heat up, around the pain site and then it’s pain free or close to it. We are just amazed how well this little cold laser light works! It’s in a durable casing, nice carrying/storage case, light weight unit, easy to use, easy access to turn on and off and comes with an extra battery. Only takes 5 minutes for a treatment. I’m very pleased with this purchase!

4.) Infrared light penetrates your dog's tissues, muscles, tendons and bones. This increases the blood circulation which then promotes healing.

Rating 4.4 out of 5. Review: Excellent bed for my senior dogs with arthritis.

It is very very tiny though.

My dog is 13 lb and he would need the large version of this bed. He still fits but I will be purchasing the bigger version for him.

5.) Joint Supplements with antioxidants also help promote healthy cartilage and joint health.

Ratings: 4.7 out of 5. 55,446 ratings. Review: My year old Pitt Bull/Sharpei mix starts limping after rigorous running & playing. His vet said she could feel some possible arthritic tissue in his leg that has the problem & he's sore I'm his back. She recommended a joint supplement before going the much more expensive route of x-rays, etc. I was familiar with Cosequin from my horse showing days so I decided to try one of their canine supplements. After 3 days on his new supplement regime, I took him to the dog park. He ran & played hard, but there was NO LIMPING afterward!!! Highly recommend!!!

6.) omega-3 fatty acids — Anti-inflammatory properties are one of the benefits of Omega-3s for dogs that make them useful for managing arthritis pain. A great nutritional supplement.

Rating: 4.6 out of 5. 41,008 Ratings. +Review: I cannot recommend this product enough! Amazing difference in my 11 year old queen! She is running again, and wants to go on walks with a lot of enthusiasm, wich before using this product, was totally absent. Really a great product that I can see results and my dog loves taking.
